THE 7 CHURCHES OF ILOCOS – VISITA IGLESIA 2010
For
our Visita Iglesia Ilocos road trip, we visited 5 churches in Ilocos Norte and
2 churches in Ilocos Sur as follows:
Ilocos Norte | St. Andrew
Parish of Bacarra and
the Bowing Belltower where according to history; the leaning position was
caused by an earthquake and was preserved by the supports placed in the
remaining structure of the walls until another earthquake finally destroyed the
tower leaving the present look of a flattened top.
Ilocos Norte | St. William’s
Cathedral of Laoag and
the Sinking Bell Tower across the street which according to the locals sunk an
inch a year due to its heavy structure that was built on a sandy foundation and
one has to bow down his head to enter its vaulted entrance.
Ilocos Norte | St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church of San Nicolas, or Church of San Nicolas, named after the patron saint St. Nicolas. Its marker states that it was founded in 1584 by the Augustinian Missionaries and was reconstructed from 1811-1830. Father Victoriano Garcia Alonso erected the tower in 1895-1897 and was occupied by Revolutionists in 1898 then by American forces in 1899 and finally by the Philippine Independent Church from 1900-1901.
Ilocos Norte | Immaculate Conception Church of Batac, originally built in 1587 but was destroyed in 1620. In 1692, it was reconstructed with a Romanesque Italian influenced look as shown in the portals, windows and moldings.
Ilocos Norte | San Agustin Church of Paoay, also known as Church of Paoay, was founded by Augustinian Missionaries in 1593 and is the best example of Philippine’s baroque architectures as declared in 1993 as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site.
Ilocos Sur | St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral of Vigan City or Cathedral of Vigan is another baroque style church that was reconstructed in 1641 and became a Cathedral in 1758 when the seat of the Diocese of Nueva Segovia was transferred from Cagayan to Vigan.
Ilocos Sur | Shrine of Our Lady of Charity of Bantay or Bantay Church which was originally built in 1590 was destroyed during the World War II. It was reconstructed in 1950 and became the Shrine of our Lady of Charity in 1956 when the miraculous image of our lade was crowned as the patroness of Ilocandia.
