Batanes Travel Tips and Do-It-Yourself Itinerary

Travel Tips:

1.    Batanes is feared for its pricey fare as the regular return airfare can go as high as P16k per head… Lucky for us, we were able to grab a promo fare of less than P1500 two-way per head.  We booked in October but our travel date was July of the succeeding year.

2.    Basco runway is just 1.25km long which explains the limitation in the aircraft capacity.  Brace yourself as landing can be a challenge especially at times of strong winds tied with the sways caused by being at Mr. Iraya foot.

The National Folk Museum

Towards the rear of Gyeongbokgung Palace, we saw a gate leading to another building.  We followed the trample unaware of what’s in store ahead until we entered an entrance with marker “free admission” to museum.

The Pan-Ay Church and its Big Bell

I have less interest on topics of the past as compared to hubby’s great love for history and politics but whenever we visit remnants of our past, the patriot side of me do reign.

We have visited quite a few of Philippine Churches and the lack of upkeep is a distress of high concern.  How we wish we put “value” in words and in acts to relics that made the “us” today that will further bridge the present to the future.

The Pan-ay Church or the Sta. Monica Parish Church was a surprise to my general impression of our heritage.  The general structure demonstrated its original materials except for the belfry which obviously was modern and distinct from the rest of the design.

Day 3 Around Iloilo City – The Jaro Cathedral, Museo Iloilo, Molo Church and Esplanade

Before we retreated to our hotel to freshen up after our quick Guimaras Island trip, we passed by the sightings near the port – the San Jose Church, Iloilo City Hall and the Libertad Plaza.

Day 1 - A Quick Silay City Historic Walk

I chose the seat with a view of sunrise but even as we landed at 545am there was a shy shade of daybreak.   I dismissed any negative feel as I have a full itinerary ahead before the PICPA Convention proper. At the airport, I boarded the shuttle to Silay and in less than an hour, the Paris version of the Philippines hailed before me.

It was only 6am then and like other provinces in the Philippines, the morning usually come sluggish with handful of people around and some streets desolated.  With the maps apps as guide, I made my way around Silay.

I passed by Rizal Park on my way to San Diego Pro-Cathedral where I prayed for safety as I embarked a full 2-day solo trip.

THE CHANGDEOKGUNG PALACE

The first stop for our Seoul tour was the Changdeokgung Palace.

From Visit Seoul:  Changdeokgung is also known as Donggwol, the Eastern Palace, because of its location to the east of Gyeongbokgung. For 270 years, the palace was home to the Joseon government and was also the favored residence of many Joseon Dynasty kings. This makes Changdeokgung the longest-serving royal residential palace. The palace's rear garden, Huwon, is considered an excellent example of Korean garden design and is the only rear garden of any Korean palace. In 1997, Changdeokgung was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Changdeokgung was built in 1405 by King Taejong (the third king of the Joseon Dynasty). In 1592 the main palace, Gyeongbokgung, was completely destroyed by fire during the Japanese invasion of Korea and Changdeokgung became the home of the Joseon court. For this reason Changdeokgung is the place which most represents the Joseon Dynasty in the popular imagination. Its status as a national symbol meant that it suffered deliberate damage by the Japanese during their occupation of Korea. For many years afterwards it was neglected until it was reconstructed and restored to its original state in 1991.

BALANGAY SITE MUSEUM

The Balangay Shrine Museum or Balangay Site Museum keeps the remnants of the earliest watercraft called “Balangay” or “Butuan Boat” which are large boats, built with wooden planks and pegs -- a National Cultural Treasure as declared through Presidential Proclamation No. 86.

Anawangin Cove and Capones Lighthouse – Pundaquit, San Antonio, Zambales

Anawangin Cove Pundaquit Zambales, anawangin blog, anawangin pictures, how to go to anawanginAfter about 3-hours of travel from Manila, we reached the Pundaquit town of Zambales.  The sound of smashing waves along the shoreline is Pundaquit's way of welcoming its guests.

Anawangin Cove can be reached via a 30-minute boat ride from the Pundaquit proper or a traverse hike through its mountains and cliffs.

The crescent shaped Anawangin Cove covered with pine trees has off-white lahar sand brought by the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in the 90’s.  Behind the trees is a stream flowing to the sea giving visitors another place to enjoy.

The absence of resorts or other developments has preserved the natural beauty of Anawangin that became a favorite relaxing destination for anyone who wants to escape the hustles of the city.  One can go for a day tour or camp for the night.  Anyone may bring along a camping equipment or have it arranged with the guide.  Take caution in observing safety, in preserving nature and in respecting the camper next to you.

THE 7 CHURCHES OF ILOCOS – VISITA IGLESIA 2010

For our Visita Iglesia Ilocos road trip, we visited 5 churches in Ilocos Norte and 2 churches in Ilocos Sur as follows:

Ilocos Norte | St. Andrew Parish of Bacarra and the Bowing Belltower where according to history; the leaning position was caused by an earthquake and was preserved by the supports placed in the remaining structure of the walls until another earthquake finally destroyed the tower leaving the present look of a flattened top.

ILOCOS ROADTRIP (Day 2 -- A Night at VIGAN CITY)

After our Day 2 at Ilocos Norte of our Ilocos-Visita Iglesia 3-day roadtrip where we visited 5 churches for our Visita Iglesia tour, we’re down to Ilocos Sur particularly Vigan City to complete our mission.  At Vigan, we stayed at Vigan Heritage Mansion courtesy of our friend companion.

The City of Vigan, the capital of Ilocos Sur, is one of Philippines’ heritage sites known for the Hispanic looks and cobbled streets like the Crisologo St. that is best photographed at night because of its vintage lighting effects.  So for this trip instead of having “socials” before our sleep, we wandered around Vigan City.

Our hotel is situated just across Crisologo St. so as soon as we’re settled in, we’re off for a walk.  It was past 8 in the evening already and our tummies are whining for food, food, food, food...  For that walk, we passed through Crisologo St. for our Cafe Leona dinner– photo ops will be done later.  Afterwards, we checked the tiangge stores fronting a book store hoping for a good buy but unfortunately, we found none.  We left the place for St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral where we had pictures with the kalesa outside the church after our prayers.

LUCBAN, QUEZON ROADTRIP [PAHIYAS 2012]

LUCBAN PAHIYAS FESTIVAL 2012
We visited Lucban in its celebration of Year 2012 Pahiyas Festival.  We left the Metro before 7am via Rizal-Laguna-Quezon route and after a 3-1/2 motorbike ride we reached Lucban.

On our way, we had a quick stop at Pagsanjan Church, had a quick bite of the roadside Bibingka before the Louisiana town and quick glimpse of a parade before we reached the Lucban proper.  The sight of Mts. Banahaw and Cristobal as we near Lucban reminded me of the challenging treks and the beautiful memories of our climbs -- looking forward to summit this giants again.

TACLOBAN – ORMOC – CEBU TRIP

We were bound for Ormoc Leyte for a business trip but since there was no direct Manila - Ormoc flight our option was to take either the Tacloban or Cebu bound flights.  So make the trip more worthy, we decided to fly in through Tacloban then flew back through Cebu.

Day 1
We left Manila for Tacloban at about 430am and arrived an hour thereafter.  At Tacloban airport, we rode the jeepney to the town proper for P50 per head.  We headed straight to Duptours shuttle terminal to inquire for Ormoc schedule.  With the next trip at 1030am, we had ample time to stroll around Tacloban City.  After we confirmed our slot, we hailed a taxi to bring us to Tacloban's fame -- the San Juanico Bridge and Mc Arthur Landing Memorial.

I've always been curious about San Juanico as early as the primary days.  Though I can't recall now the history writings but what it has been known to connect Tacloban and Samar.  Now, I was finally able to sat foot and experience crossing San Juanico bridge.  For the tourist, it was a wonder and some dared to climb the top for a pose.. but for the locals, maybe just an ordinary bridge that they pass through everyday.

San Juanico Bridge
After the San Juanico crossover, we're off to Palo for Mc Arthur's Landing Memorial.  Palo was surprisingly the prim-and-proper town type.  According to hubby, Palo is the seat of Government and even of the Catholic Church in the region.   The town planning as exhibited by tree-lined roads and the classic government buildings can be mistaken as being in another country.   And the beautiful, clean and quiet environment is also an added factor.

The memorial was filled with water that time so we had no pose beside the might General.   But nonetheless, hubby's planking sealed our visit.

After Palo, we went back to the terminal to catch our ride.  I’m starving already because we haven't had breakfast and no sight of an open restaurant on our way. Thankfully the terminal has a donut store and that lived for awhile.

The bus left at 11am and unlucky for me, I seated at the wrong side – direct at the sunlight.  I can feel the heat of the sun and the air-conditioning was inadequate to cool the loaded bus.  But being seated as compared to those that were standing or squatting at hallway shove off my complaints.

Finally after 3 hours of zigzagged ride in a sauna-like bus we reached Ormoc.  We hurried to Sugarland Suites, our host hotel, for lunch and to freshen up.  Then the rest of the afternoon was spent attending to business matters.

Day 2
On our second day, we walked around the City and visited the nearby Sabin Resort Hotel. The establishments and buildings around Ormoc are within walking distance and in close proximity -- from the market to the shopping mall, to the church, to the government offices, to the hotels and to the parks.  Ormoc City Tourism Office is situated at the entrance of the port where brochures and maps are available for free...

For our lunch, we had lechon.. hmmm... and the city wander helped us dissolve the negative aspects that comes with it.  Ormoc’s lechon sauce is presented differently from Manila's lechon.  Theirs is a thick clear sauce made of different herbs.  I thought oddly at first but it was delicious.
